about
'Babysitter' is fuck you to the patriarchy. I wrote it during a time when I was newly single and dating casually. I found that I was overjoyed on dates by the smallest things - like having dinner made for me and not having to be the one to always make the plans or hold the conversation. Looking back I realised I was getting excited about, really, the bare minimum. As a woman in a heteronormative relationship you are essentially taught to babysit men, this song is my call to women/ non-binary people to know their worth and needs and don’t settle for babysitting!! From the start I knew ‘Babysitter’ had to be an angry rock song because for me it felt like the only way to capture the pent up frustration. I felt this song needed distortion and grungy guitars and heavy synths to capture the weight and intensity of the anger I was feeling.
lyrics
You said you’d like to make me dinner
& I think that’s the sexiest thing anyone’s ever offered
Give me a date and time and I just might lose my mind
So is it true, you’ve got not just one job but two of them, oh
And is this independance all a facade or genuine
Is this just something you do, a trick you’ll use to turn me on
No dummy to spit out
Cause I’m not dating a little kid now
I’m really loving not being a babysitter
Oh I’m really loving not being a babysitter
Ohh, I’m really loving not being a baby, baby
My hands won’t move fast enough
When you tell me you’ll be up with the sun, oh
You can’t see me too much to do, are you trying to turn me on?
No dummy to spit out
Cause I’m not dating a little kid now
And I’m really loving not being a babysitter
Oh I’m really loving not being a babysitter
Ohh, I’m really loving not being a baby, baby
He’ll stay head above water
And you’ll take me deep diving under
His dad will keep him afloat
But I told him I quit, take me under the boats
Takes him 3 hours to do up his laces
You throw on your thongs no time to be wasted
Thank fuck, someone who makes me feel young
Let’s go back to yours I’m so turned on
And I’m really loving not being a baby
Oh I’m really loving not being a baby, no, no
Ohh, I’m really loving not being a baby, baby
So yes please, feel free, to make me dinner
